Nigeria’s education reforms will depend on reliable data, stronger cooperation between federal and state governments, and leaders willing to make bold, evidence-based decisions, according to the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa.
Speaking at the Executive Retreat for Commissioners of Education, the Minister said lasting transformation cannot be achieved by the Federal Government alone. He called for closer collaboration with state governments to improve planning, accountability, resource distribution and learning outcomes across the country.
A key part of this effort is the deployment of the National Education Data Infrastructure and the Digitalised Nigeria Education Management Information System. The platforms are expected to provide more accurate education data and help governments make better decisions about schools, teachers, funding and student performance.
Dr Alausa also encouraged state governments to participate fully in the World Bank-supported HOPE Education Programme. The programme provides US$552 million in performance-based financing to strengthen education governance, improve teacher quality and deliver better learning outcomes.
He urged participating states to complete the required implementation processes so they can access the available funding and begin delivering measurable improvements within their education systems.
The Minister reaffirmed that the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative will continue to prioritise foundational learning, Technical and Vocational Education and Training, STEM education, digital learning and sustainable education financing.
The Federal Ministry of Education said it will continue working with state governments, development partners and education stakeholders to build a more inclusive and resilient system that equips Nigerian learners with the knowledge and practical skills required for national development.
